A Call for Unity: Celebrating Canada’s Support for Ukraine on the Day of the National Flag

Last year, we had the honor of welcoming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Toronto at the Fairmont Royal York hotel, where he participated in a pivotal round table discussion with Canadian business leaders. This gathering, attended by key figures such as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, underscored the deep and enduring partnership between Canada and Ukraine. The discussions centered around strengthening economic ties and fostering collaboration in various sectors, highlighting the potential for Canadian businesses to play a significant role in Ukraine’s recovery and rebuilding efforts.

As we celebrate the Day of the National Flag today, it’s important to reflect on President Zelenskyy’s last visit to Toronto in 2019, a significant moment that occurred before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. During that visit, he, alongside First Lady Olena Zelenska, made a powerful statement by arriving on a plane adorned with the Ukrainian flag. The crew proudly displayed the blue-and-yellow flag outside the cockpit window upon landing, creating a symbol of unity and resilience. This gesture resonated deeply with the strength and determination of the Ukrainian people, who have faced unimaginable challenges but continue to stand firm in their fight for sovereignty and freedom.

Earlier, President Zelenskyy took the global stage at the UN General Assembly in New York City, where Prime Minister Trudeau once again demonstrated Canada’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine. In his speech, Trudeau called on the international community to bolster Ukraine’s war effort, urging nations to provide military and humanitarian support. He emphasized the importance of solidarity in the face of aggression, reminding us that the values of democracy and human rights are worth fighting for. However, the need for global support remains critical as the war continues to inflict suffering on countless civilians and disrupt lives.

As a peace ambassador, a title I’m deeply honored to hold thanks to Karim Mirshahi’s initiative for an International Peace Festival, I am committed to advocating for peace and justice. From Canada, we strive to remind people of the ongoing wars and conflicts that continue to affect millions worldwide. It is our responsibility to foster dialogue, raise awareness, and mobilize support for those caught in the crossfire of violence. We carry this duty with solemn determination, knowing that every effort counts in the pursuit of peace.

Since 2014, we have seen the resilience of the Ukrainian people exemplified not only on the battlefield but also in the hearts of those who stand with them. Canadians have come together in solidarity, organizing fundraisers, rallies, and awareness campaigns to support Ukraine. This strong movement reflects a deep-seated commitment to humanitarian values and a recognition of our shared humanity. It serves as a reminder that in times of crisis, our collective action can make a profound difference.

Thank you, Canada, for standing by Ukraine in its time of need. Your support is not just a gesture; it is a lifeline. On this Day of the National Flag, let us renew our commitment to stand united in the face of adversity and to champion the cause of peace for all.

Slava Ukraine!

Glory to Canada!
