These days, you can’t escape buzzwords like “female entrepreneur,” “equality,” and “self-made women.” While it’s fantastic to see progress in empowering women, I can’t help but wonder: have we lost sight of what really matters? In wealthier countries, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for women to afford having kids. There was a time when one income could support a whole family, but now, even with two full-time jobs, many couples struggle to make ends meet. Family values seem to be fading, and as we look to the future, the reality of an aging population and a shrinking younger generation is becoming more pressing.
Living in North America, Western Europe, and other developed places, it sometimes feels like we’re driven by the wrong values. In many parts of the world, churches are still packed, couples are becoming parents instead of just partners, and young people are choosing to have children rather than pets. Don’t get me wrong—I believe everyone should have the freedom to live how they want. But it does make me wonder: why do we have entire months dedicated to various causes, yet only a single day set aside to celebrate Family?
Throughout my two years in Canada, these questions kept coming to my mind, but I found it challenging to voice them. As a proud Ukrainian raised with strong family values, I often felt like an outsider—until I attended the reception party of a beautiful couple, Upkar & Vaninder. That evening was a turning point for me; they gave me something I hadn’t felt in a long time: hope.
Hope that in this country, family still holds significance. Watching Upkar and Vaninder, I saw a couple who genuinely value each other, who still want to experience the joy of a wedding, who plan to commit to one another for the long haul, and who dream of having children to share their lives with. Their commitment to family and their love for one another sparked something in me. I’m so grateful they invited me to share in their celebration, and I wish them nothing but happiness as they embark on this journey together.
I look forward to attending their baby shower, excited to witness their dreams come true as a couple—because together, we are stronger. Together, we can accomplish so much more. Together, the world is ours to explore and embrace.
Thank you, Upkar & Vaninder, for reminding me of what really matters in life. Thank you for demonstrating that family is still cherished here in Canada. As I sat at the table, surrounded by friends and family who love and support each other, I felt a sense of belonging wash over me. I saw children laughing, families enjoying each other’s company, mothers sharing stories, and grandparents smiling warmly at their loved ones. I was overwhelmed with gratitude for this beautiful experience. Thank you for making me feel like I belong and for showing me that family is still something to be celebrated in this ever-changing world.
As we navigate these modern times, let’s remember the importance of family and connection. It’s those relationships that ground us and give our lives meaning, no matter where we come from or what challenges we face. Let’s embrace the idea that family, in all its forms, is worth celebrating every day of the year.
